Use AI when the task involves ambiguity, language, judgment, summarization, classification, or generation. Avoid AI when the task needs exactness, auditability, cheap repetition, strict permissions, or deterministic behavior. The safest pattern is usually this: AI suggests, software decides.

The Temptation: AI Everywhere
Once you know how to call an AI API, every product starts to look like it could use one. Summarize this. Rewrite that. Generate a plan. Classify this message. Explain this error. Suggest the next action. Turn a messy input into something structured.
Sometimes that instinct is right. AI is genuinely useful for tasks that used to require a human to read, interpret, and respond. It can turn vague text into structure, make software more flexible, and help users move faster through information-heavy workflows.
But "could use AI" is not the same as "should use AI." A feature can be impressive in a demo and still be a bad product decision. It might be too expensive, too slow, too unpredictable, too hard to test, or too risky when it gets something wrong.
The job is not to make everything intelligent. The job is to make the product better.
Good AI Feature Candidates
AI is strongest where the input is messy and the desired output has some tolerance for variation. It is especially useful when a human would otherwise need to read, interpret, transform, or draft something.
- Summarization. Turning long documents, support threads, meeting notes, or research material into shorter versions.
- Classification. Routing tickets, tagging content, identifying intent, grouping feedback, or separating urgent items from routine ones.
- Extraction. Pulling names, dates, addresses, action items, requirements, or structured fields out of unstructured text.
- Drafting. Creating first-pass emails, descriptions, reports, release notes, support replies, or documentation.
- Transformation. Rewriting text for tone, translating between formats, converting prose into checklists, or turning rough notes into a plan.
- Assisted search. Helping users ask natural-language questions over documents, logs, knowledge bases, or product data.
- Decision support. Presenting options, trade-offs, risks, or likely next steps for a human to review.
Notice the pattern: the AI is helping with interpretation and expression. It is not the final authority. It is making a messy task easier for a person or a deterministic system to finish.
If the feature starts with "read this messy thing and help me understand it," AI is probably worth considering. If it starts with "guarantee this exact outcome every time," ordinary code is usually the better default.
Bad AI Feature Candidates
AI is a poor fit when correctness must be exact, explainable, cheap, and repeatable. That does not mean AI can never be involved. It means it should not be the part making the final decision.
- Pricing and billing. Discounts, invoices, taxes, refunds, and subscription state should be calculated by deterministic code.
- Permissions and access control. Who can see what, edit what, approve what, or delete what must be rule-based and auditable.
- Legal, financial, or medical conclusions. AI can summarize or draft, but a qualified human or strict rules need to own the decision.
- Security enforcement. Authentication, authorization, rate limiting, encryption, and abuse prevention need reliable mechanisms, not generated judgment.
- Compliance checks. Regulations require traceability. "The model thought it was okay" is not a compliance strategy.
- Simple deterministic transformations. If a regular function can solve it clearly, use the regular function. Do not pay tokens to uppercase a string.
- High-volume repetitive tasks with narrow rules. If the logic is stable and the volume is large, AI cost and latency can become hard to justify.
The risky pattern is letting AI make hidden decisions that users cannot inspect, challenge, or recover from. If the result affects money, access, safety, reputation, or legal standing, the system needs guardrails outside the model.
The Five-Question Test
Before adding AI to a feature, answer these five questions. If you cannot answer them clearly, the feature is not ready yet.
1. Is the Input Ambiguous Enough to Need AI?
AI earns its place when the input is varied, unstructured, or hard to capture with rules. Customer emails are messy. Bug reports are messy. Meeting notes are messy. Product feedback is messy.
A country dropdown is not messy. A permission check is not messy. A tax rate lookup is not messy. If the input can be handled with clear fields and rules, start there.
2. Is a "Good Enough" Answer Acceptable?
AI output is probabilistic. It may be excellent most of the time and odd some of the time. That is acceptable for a suggested reply, a summary, or a first draft. It is not acceptable for a bank balance.
The question is not "can the AI be right?" The question is "what happens when it is wrong?"
3. Can the User Review or Correct the Result?
AI features are safer when users stay in control. A generated email draft is useful because the user can edit it before sending. A proposed ticket category is useful because a support agent can override it. A suggested migration plan is useful because a developer can review it.
If the user never sees the AI's reasoning or output before the system acts, the feature needs much stronger evaluation, logging, and fallback behavior.
4. Is There a Fallback When AI Fails?
AI APIs can time out, return malformed output, hit rate limits, or produce something unusable. A production feature needs a plan for that.
- Can the user continue without the AI result?
- Can the system retry safely?
- Can you show a useful error instead of a blank state?
- Can deterministic logic handle the minimum viable version?
If the whole workflow collapses when the AI call fails, the feature is more fragile than it looks.
5. Are Cost and Latency Acceptable?
AI features are not free. Every request has latency. Every token has cost. Longer prompts, larger context windows, and higher-quality models increase both.
A slow AI feature might be fine in a back-office workflow where a user expects to wait five seconds for analysis. It is much less fine in a checkout flow, search autocomplete, or high-volume background job.

The "Maybe" category is where most real product work happens. AI might help, but only if the surrounding system contains the risk.
The Hidden Costs
The model call is the easy part. The real cost of an AI feature often appears around the edges.
- Prompt maintenance. Prompts become production logic. They need versioning, review, and regression tests.
- Evaluation data. You need representative examples of good, bad, edge-case, and adversarial inputs.
- Logging and privacy. You need to know what was sent, what came back, and whether sensitive data is being handled correctly.
- Support load. Users will ask why the AI produced a result, especially when the result surprises them.
- Abuse cases. People may try to manipulate the feature, extract hidden prompts, bypass policy, or make it process hostile input.
- Model changes. Provider updates can change behavior. A prompt that worked well last month may drift.
- Fallback design. You need a useful non-AI path when the model is slow, unavailable, or wrong.
None of these are reasons to avoid AI. They are reasons to treat an AI feature like a production dependency, not a decorative flourish.
The Safer Pattern: AI Suggests, Software Decides
The most reliable AI product pattern is not "AI replaces the workflow." It is "AI improves one part of the workflow while deterministic software keeps control of the boundaries."
Examples:
- AI suggests a support category; the ticketing system applies routing rules.
- AI drafts a reply; the human sends it.
- AI extracts invoice fields; validation code checks totals, dates, and required fields.
- AI proposes a code change; tests and review decide whether it merges.
- AI summarizes a policy document; the original source remains linked and authoritative.
This pattern gives you the benefit of AI without handing the whole system over to a probabilistic component. AI handles ambiguity. Software handles guarantees.
Put AI where interpretation is valuable. Put deterministic code where correctness is required. The product gets much safer when those responsibilities are separate.
What to Build First
If you are unsure whether a feature should use AI, build the smallest version that lets you test the risk.
- Start with a human-reviewed version. Let AI produce drafts, suggestions, tags, or summaries that users can inspect.
- Collect real examples. Save inputs, outputs, user edits, overrides, and failures. That becomes your evaluation set.
- Add deterministic validation. Check schema, length, allowed values, permissions, totals, and any hard business rules outside the model.
- Measure usefulness. Track whether users accept, edit, ignore, or undo the AI result.
- Only automate after evidence. If the feature is consistently accurate in low-risk use, then consider deeper automation.
This keeps the first version honest. You are not trying to prove that AI is impressive. You are trying to prove that it helps the user enough to justify its cost and risk.
The Bottom Line
AI is not a product strategy by itself. It is a capability. It can make a feature dramatically better when the problem involves language, ambiguity, judgment, or creative transformation. It can make a product worse when it replaces simple code, hides important decisions, or adds uncertainty to a workflow that needed reliability.
The best AI features feel almost boring once they work. They remove friction. They help users understand, draft, sort, search, or decide. They have fallbacks. They show their work. They keep humans in the loop where the stakes are high. And they leave exact decisions to systems that can be tested, audited, and trusted.
The question is not "can we add AI here?"
The better question is: "What part of this feature actually benefits from probabilistic help, and what part still needs deterministic control?"
